About ’Not to leave behind’
’Not to leave behind’ is a project on collections and the act of collecting; how keepsakes from nature –albeit an object or a photograph– together form part of an identity. Born out of a desire to come into her own after her maternity leave, Ligtermoet dug deep into her extensive archive and materialised her findings in ceramic sculptures.
Further exploring the use of natural and found materials, Ligtermoet used banana and citrus peels, salt, coffee grounds and other household items to fire ceramic sculptures with a primitive method. One work consists more of granite than clay, and small porcelain works are glazed with wood and volcanic ashes.
The sculptural works are accompanied by a variety of photographs. Some are from travels made in the last decade, while others show collected items and snippets from a notebook.
In the end, ”Not to leave behind” became a collection in itself.
